The newly opened Elephant Bar & Brasserie serves fresh, locally-inspired cuisine, with menus that change seasonally while the Terrace is the place to enjoy alfresco dining, morning coffee, afternoon tea and cocktails. The French-style brasserie with a very definite Cornish twist serves the best in local produce, with an ever-changing menu making the most of Cornwall’s natural larder of land and sea.

Situated in the main Victorian White House, the Brasserie offers laid-back breakfast and lunch menus, as well as a sophisticated yet relaxed evening dinner service, complete with a superb selection of wines from the hotel’s cellar. With a menu that ranges from homemade beef burgers and traditional fish and chips to Fowey mussels and roast Cornish lamb, the Elephant Bar & Brasserie aims to be a standalone restaurant and bar that will appeal to locals, visitors to the area and guests staying in the Estate’s hotel rooms and woodland self-catering homes.

During the opening of The Elephant Bar & Brasserie, Jamie Le Freic, General Manager at The Cornwall Hotel Spa & Estate, said: “We have brought together our food and beverage offering under one cohesive brand, which we are really proud of – The Elephant is bold and beautiful, and our chefs have been working hard to pull together a menu that reflects what The Cornwall is about; classics with a contemporary, Cornish twist.”

The beautifully-designed bar & brasserie, by Bristol-based Studio Cwtch, takes inspiration from the Estate’s roots in the Victorian era, and the great Victorian tradition of exploration, with interesting artefacts and objects d’art from across the globe on display, including, of course, several elephants!

Guests can also dine alfresco on the newly-extended terrace overlooking the manicured lawns of the estate, where there is formal and informal seating for up to 50 people. This is the perfect spot to enjoy a drink in the Cornish sun, while the kids play with the selection of fun lawn games.

Afternoon tea is a timeless English tradition and no trip to The Cornwall is complete without feasting on one of the finest delicacies in Cornwall – the classic Cornish Cream Tea.

After a relaxing day driving to Cornwall in the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider wearing my Weird Fish Resolution “Wear the Weekend” rugby top and Maui Jim sunglasses, I arrived at The Cornwall Hotel Spa & Estate and entered The Elephant Bar & Brasserie. What a perfect spot to enjoy a quintessentially Cornish Cream Tea with fresh scones smothered in locally-produced Rodda’s clotted cream and strawberry jam.

If you have larger appetite, as well as the freshly baked homemade scones, the Full Afternoon Tea at The Cornwall includes a selection of traditional savoury sandwiches with fillings such as smoked salmon and typically English cucumber.

And for those with a sweet tooth, make room after the savoury delights for sweet treats such as the delightful French macaron, dense chocolate brownie, decadent truffle, Cornish fudge and fluffy light meringue in the shape of a swan. Why not push the boat out and enjoy a glass of Prosecco or Champagne with your sweet and savoury delicacies.

Later that day, we returned to dine at the Elephant Bar & Brasserie known for its delicious locally sourced Cornish food. This was made apparent from the start as we were introduced to an exciting menu. The restaurant is located in the restored former manor house at the heart of The Cornwall Hotel Spa & Estate.

To start we had the Fried Cornish Squid – fried local squid rings with peanut satay sauce and wilted sesame bok choi.

My dining companion had the Cornish Crab Cakes using locally sourced crab with Thai spices and panko. They were served with lotus root crisps, pea shoots and brown crab mayonnaise.

For the main course I chose the Cornish Bass with parsley and lemon crushed potatoes. This came with a dressing of broccoli purée, Canara Farm rainbow chard, crayfish and vanilla butter.

Who would resist a side portion of hand cut chips…

My dining companion had the Roast Rump of Cornish Lamb – roast rump, crispy braised shoulder, Pomme Anna, charred yellow courgette, black garlic puree and Nicoise lamb jus.

To end the meal, we had Sticky Toffee Pudding served in a pool of toffee sauce with white chocolate ice cream.

We also chose the Trio of Spheres from the dessert menu. The dish consisted of iced peanut butter parfait coated in praline, chocolate truffle coated in chocolate soil, white chocolate rice pudding coated in burnt white chocolate powder, chocolate soil and white chocolate sorbet.
