The Kings Head at Hursley: Georgian Coaching Inn Wins Best Pub in Hampshire For Third Year Running

Handsome Village Inn

The King’s Head was awarded the title of best pub in Hampshire for the third year in a row.

The King’s Head is a four star Georgian coaching inn nestled within the historic Hampshire downland village of Hursley, just south of Winchester.

Having just won the prestigious accolade  of ‘Best Pub in Hampshire’ in The National Pub and Bar Awards for the third year in a row, we couldn’t help but pay them a visit to experience Hampshire’s finest for ourselves.

The King’s Head is a handsome village inn with eight cosy cottage-style rooms all thoughtfully furnished and beautifully decorated.

We discovered that even the bathrooms are filled with cosy character and beautiful fittings like this Victorian style roll top bath.

This cosy warm-hearted pub also serves exceptional, locally sourced Hampshire fare home-cooked by award-winning chef Patrícia Antunes.

The King’s Head is an ideal countryside getaway or stop off for lunch, afternoon tea or a pint of real ale.

The Kings Head has been awarded a multitude of awards over the past three years including Best Pub in Hampshire 2017 & 2016, Team of The Year by Eat Out Awards 2016, Most Delightful Country Bar and Restaurant in Winchester by LUX in their 2016 Hospitality Award as well as being awarded a coveted AA Rosette and being declared an AA 4 Star Silver Inn.

Without Puppy Gizmo in tow we left this charming pooch in charge of our room whilst we went downstairs to take in the ambience of the venue.

Selected by The National Pub and Bar Awards judges for meeting the various criteria of of what makes a hospitality experience truly excellent, The King’s Head fulfilled each criterion to the very highest standard.

With the AA rosette food aptly fit for a king and its excellent range of guest ales to compliment their meals perfectly, it’s no surprise the added character and charm of The King’s Head in Hursley wowed the judges.

All this is paired with a most unique asset, their own traditional skittles alley, making it even clearer why The King’s Head was awarded the title of best pub in Hampshire for the third year in a row.

With such an acclaimed reputation we knew we were in for a treat as we sat down to dinner. To start we tried the Portland Crab Cake served with pineapple and sweet chilli jam, caramelised lime and micro cress. It was a pleasant surprise with the elements of the dish working well together and the crab flavours whet the palate perfectly and left us in anticipation for the main event.

We took the recommendation of the Twice Baked, Cave Aged Cheddar Cheese Souffle. Although the dish might appear heavy in its appearance, inside the souffle was perfectly cooked and was light and fluffy in texture leaving you with the satisfaction of having had a naughty dish without the stuffed feeling one would expect to accompany it.

For our main course we tried the Pan Seared Halibut with Jersey Royals, Asparagus, Parsely and Bacon Butter. The halibut was perfectly cooked and the large flakes of the fish were firm and tender. The accompaniment of the bacon butter made this dish a must try.

My dining companion had the Duck Breast with Wild Garlic Gnocchi, Purple Sprouting Broccoli, Orange and Caramel Jus. The duck was perfectly cooked medium rare and the flavours of the wild garlic gnocchi brought a new dimension to this divine duck dish.

To finish I couldn’t help but order the Hot Apple and Cinnamon Doughnuts with Toffee Sauce and Coconut Ice Cream. This dish is a taste-tastic treat and is surprisingly light. The apple filling pairs perfectly with the toffee sauce which is had me going dip dip dippy!

My dining companion had the Chocolate Tart with Blood Orange Sorbet. The richness of the tart works well with the zesty flavour of the sorbet.

The King’s Head is a true country inn with a few luxurious touches thrown in making this award-winning pub with rooms firmly on the must-visit list of anyone wishing for a cosy night’s stay with great food in a warm friendly ambience when visiting WInchester and the New Forest.
